I am a big fan of the TV show Shark Tank. This show allows entrepreneurs to pitch their business or business ideas to a panel of four to five potential investors. The entrepreneurs are hoping that the investors will see value in their company and want to invest financially in exchange for partial ownership. These investors are tough as nails, savvy, proven entrepreneurs, each of which are worth millions.

Recently there was an episode where an inventor came up with a way to change a product that had not been changed for hundreds of years. The product was a simple door lock. This guy designed a common household lock that would open and lock with a simple push of a button via your smartphone.

To me this was absolutely fascinating! He upgraded a product that many would argue did not need to be upgraded. I believe that in the future, we will all get access to our homes via our favorite smartphone. As I expected all of the investors on the show also called “Sharks” ended up competing for the opportunity of partnering with this innovator. He had WOWED them!

So why share this story with you? In business it is really easy to fall into the mindset of “If It Ain’t Broke Don’t Fix It.” This way of thinking is destructive and limiting. Those who want to win big in this competition must have a different outlook. If you are approaching your job hunt in the same boring way as you have always done then you are missing a tremendous opportunity.

Find a way to be unique and different. Ask yourself if are you doing the same thing as all of the other candidates. If you answered yes, then you are in serious jeopardy of getting lost in the crowd. You are forgettable and that’s the one thing you don’t want!

In the above example, this inventor used technology to transform an insipid product into something new and exciting. You can do the same! What I am really taking about is personal branding. You need to build a campaign to brand “YOU” just like you would if you were a marketing director for a corporate giant.

   This really is great advice. I think too many people who go into an interview miss their “golden opportunity” to make a lasting impression that will help them get the job. Great Article!
