Protecting Your iPad From Thieves or Loss

Today I’m going to share an experience with you that I think you might find interesting as well as helpful. One of the things that many sales professionals have in common is that we spend a lot of time in our cars driving from client to client. I had a bit of a problem with my car a couple of weeks ago. Believe it or not, someone broke into it! I have no idea how they got in since they didn’t break a window and I’m positive that the doors were locked. As a matter of fact, I have a compulsive habit of double checking to make sure my car doors are always locked.

One of main tools that I use in my job is my iPad. I use it quite frequently to do presentations for my clients. This device is absolutely critical to me. I use it everyday and really can’t do my job effectively without it. Unfortunately, when the thieves broke into my car, they also stole my computer bag that had my iPad in it!

I immediately contacted my company to let them know about the break in and to my surprise they were able to do a couple of very amazing things to protect the information that was stored on the device. They had a GPS tracking application which is very much like a cell phone locator app installed on it so they were actually able to log into the web based interface of the app and lock my iPad with a password. Doing this prevented the thieves from gaining access to my company’s proprietary information as well as my personal information.

When they decided that there wouldn’t be any hope of recovering my stolen iPad, they were actually able to log into it via the Internet and delete everything that was stored on the device.

Many sales professionals use iPads in their day to day jobs these days. If you fall into this category, you can protect your device should it ever be lost or stolen with a powerful free application called Find My iPhone. You can download this for free from the apps store on your iPad. In order to be able to use it, you will have to log in to iCloud with your Apple ID username and password. You can do that by going to the website: https://www.icloud.com.

Once you have downloaded the app and you have your iCloud account set up, you’re almost done. Next, you need to go to “settings”, “iCloud”, then scroll down and toggle on the “Find my iPad” feature. If you should ever lose your iPad, you can simply log into your iCloud account from a computer or smartphone and locate your device using the GPS receiver that is built into it. You can also use the “Lock” and “Erase iPad” features if you need to.

If you do happen to lose your iPad, I suggest that you immediately log into iCloud and use the Lock feature to lock it which will prevent any unauthorized use of the device. If you don’t think that you’ll be able to recover your iPad such as in cases when it might have been stolen, you can log in and use the Erase iPad feature.

I should point out that this application also works for iPhones and on the iPod Touch. If you use any of these devices for your job, I highly recommend that you take the time to set up Find My iPhone on your device right away. It could save you a lot of trouble in the long run.
